- Walking out onto Sydney cricket ground, first ever test match, looking up at scoreboard and seeing ‘congratulations Shane Warne you are the 350th Test Cricketer to play for Australia.
Known as “The King of Spin,” Shane Warne is widely regarded as one of the best bowlers in the history of cricket. He brought a masterfully executed leg spin back to the game, which cricket followers had come to regard as a dying art due to its difficulty. Shane took 708 Test wickets (2nd all-time), and was named one of five Wisden Cricketers of the 20th Century.
One of Shane’s most spectacular performances was spinning the famous “Gatting Ball”, otherwise known as the “Ball of the Century,” which mesmerized both Mike Gatting and fans in the 1993 Ashes series. Other achievements and honors include a BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, his portrait displayed in the Long Room of the Marylebone Cricket Club at Lord’s and being named in Australia’s Hall of Fame. In the 1999 World Cup, won by Australia, Warne finished with the most wickets.
