Icons Series today announced the addition of two-time NBA champion J.R. Smith, who will be joining Team USA for the inaugural US event at the prestigious Liberty National Golf Club on June 30 – July 1, 2022.
An NBA champion with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers, Smith spent 16 years
in the league and was named the 2013 Sixth Man of the Year. Known for his ability to knock
down a shot from anywhere on the court, Smith is a New Jersey native and attended St.
Benedict’s Prep in Newark, just 12 miles away from Liberty National. Upon his retirement from
basketball, he enrolled at North Carolina A&T where he walked onto the university’s golf team in
2021.
“We’re thrilled to welcome J.R. Smith to the Icons Series lineup at Liberty National Golf Club this summer,” said Icons Series CEO, Thomas Brookes. “J.R. Smith is a global sporting star, and we can’t wait to watch him compete and elevate the Icons Series to new heights.”
Smith joins Team USA led by World Golf Hall of Famer and captain Fred Couples and will play
alongside the most decorated Olympian of all-time Michael Phelps, Pro Football Hall of Famer
and Super Bowl champion Michael Strahan, and two-time Super Bowl champion Ben
Roethlisberger.
Team USA and Team Rest of the World will announce additional Icons to the event lineup in the coming
weeks of the event, with 12 total icons per team participating.
