TEAM ENGLAND TAKE COMMANDING LEAD INTO FINAL AFTERNOON SINGLES SHOWDOWN

Team England will take a commanding lead into the afternoon singles as the Reignwood Icons of Football heads for a thrilling finale at Robinswood Golf Club.

The leaderboard was a sea of red in the Sunday morning alternate-shot,with Lee Westwood’s men triumphing in four of the six matches to open up a 44-22 lead, leaving Team World with their work cut out in the final session of the tournament.

One of the standout matches saw former Manchester United teammates Paul Scholes and Phil Jones combine beautifully to defeat their former colleague Carlos Tevez and Real Madrid legend Luis Figo 5-1. With double points on offer at the final hole, the match could have ended all square, but the English pair secured the spoils with a great display of teamwork in the alternate-shot format.

“It looks like a thrashing, but it didn’t feel like that when we were playing,” said Scholes. “Carlos and Luis played really well—especially Carlos. He putts so well on these greens. He did amazing. We struggled a little bit, but we managed to rescue each other a few times, so we dovetailed well.”

Jones added: “The conditions are tough with the heat and everything else. There are nerves on every tee, but this guy is unbelievable with his driver, so he helped me out quite a lot, and then I could stick one close from the fairway.”

With a huge task for Team World ahead, team captains Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia have announced the pairings for the all-important final afternoon singles session to decide who takes home the Icons Trophy.
