LEE WESTWOOD AND SERGIO GARCIA ANNOUNCED AS TEAM CAPTAINS FOR REIGNWOOD ICONS OF FOOTBALL
Bangkok, 2nd September 2024 – Golfing legends Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia have been confirmed as team captains for the highly anticipated Reignwood Icons of Football event, set to take place on the 1st-2nd March 2025 at Robinswood Golf Course in Bangkok. Hosted by the Icons Series, the tournament will feature 24 footballing icons as Team England takes on Team World in a head to head showdown that brings fans closer than ever.
The event will see football’s greatest names trade their boots for clubs, competing under the guidance of Westwood and Garcia in a 10-hole matchplay format over two days. Fans can expect high drama as these football icons bring their competitive spirit to the fairways, with Westwood leading Team England and Garcia captaining Team World.
Lee Westwood, hailing from England, has long been a mainstay in professional golf. With a professional career spanning over four decades, Westwood has enjoyed a remarkable 44 professional wins, including 25 victories on the European Tour. His consistency, longevity, and leadership have earned him global respect. A former world number one, he’s been an integral part of a record breaking seven Ryder Cup winning teams that has seen him cement his status as a golfing great known for tactical prowess and composure under pressure.
His understanding of golf at the very highest level mixed with his passion for football that stems from his love of Nottingham Forest makes him the obvious choice to captain Team England.
Sergio Garcia, Spain's golfer of a generation, adds an equally impressive résumé to the captaincy. Famous for his flair and passion on the course, Garcia has achieved 37 professional wins, including his long-awaited Masters victory in 2017. Known for his fiery spirit and electrifying performances, Garcia’s presence in the Ryder Cup has been particularly noteworthy. He holds the record for the most points earned in Ryder Cup history, solidifying his status as a match-play legend.
Garcia’s leadership style will undoubtedly bring a mix of charisma, strategy, and heartfelt motivation. His global success, combined with his passion for football and love of Real Madrid cements him as the leading candidate for Team World.
