Lee Westwood’s Team England will take a slender lead into the final day at the Reignwood Icons of Football after a strong afternoon alternate shot session by Sergio Garcia’s Team World at Robinswood Golf Club which left the scores poised at 24-20.
Garcia’s men needed a fast start after finishing the morning fourballs 17-3 down, and Argentine duo Gabriel Batistuta and Carlos Tevez delivered with a dominant 7-2 victory over Paul Ince and Robbie Fowler, setting the tone for the afternoon.
A 4-2 win followed for former Manchester United teammates Nemanja Vidić and Diego Forlán against fellow former Red Phil Jones and Joe Hart. John Terry and Jimmy Bullard battled hard to claw a point back with a 3-2 victory over Hamit Altıntop and Nigel de Jong.
However, an emphatic win in the next match saw Team World right back in the mix. Gianfranco Zola and Patrik Berger handed Theo Walcott and Jermaine Jenas a 6-2 defeat, before Ronald de Boer and Ruud Gullit put Paul Scholes and Phil Jagielka to the sword with a 6-2 triumph.
With momentum shifting, Teddy Sheringham and Lee Sharpe swung the pendulum back in Team England’s favour in the final match of the day, delivering a commanding 7-1 victory over Luís Figo and David Ginola, ensuring it’s all to play for in tomorrow’s final round.
"Sergio told us not to give up after the morning session and said we could still achieve great things," said Zola of his legendary captain. "And that’s exactly what happened. He’s been fantastic for us, and we’re back in it."
The opening day also featured the much-anticipated debut of the ‘Richest Hole in Golf’, where players took on Robinswood Golf Course’s signature par-3 12th hole for a chance to win US$10million with a hole-in-one. Robbie Fowler came closest, landing his shot just 6.8 feet from the pin.
The final round will tee off with the alternate shot session in the morning 08.30.
